Shake rattle and bowl your way through summer showers

Things are looking a little damp outside this summer but that's no reason not to go out and have fun with your mates or the family over the holidays.

Not every wine region can boast one of these little beauties. As the name suggests,
Shake Rattle n Bowl has ten pin bowling, but they also have an indoor play area and pool hall...and the chance to refuel with a wood fired oven pizza or something from the cafe.   It all happens in the heart of Stanthorpe town, which in itself is surrounded by dozens of wineery cellar doors - and some great national parks.  Shake Rattle n Bowl is open daily 8am-10pm but phone ahead on public holidays 07 4681 0051.

Max Allen's Future Makers include the Granite Belt

Described on Amazon as groundbreaking new work by respected wine writer Max Allen, this book will redefine Australia’s wine landscape for the new century. In his tour around the country, Max introduces you to the areas and the people shaping Australia’s wine future, including those in the Queensland wine capital.

The 400+ page hard cover book provides detailed explanations of why a region’s wines taste the way they do: a portrait of soils, climate, grape varieties and cultural influences that contribute to the singular qualities of Australia’s diverse wine styles. Max has previously described Queensland's Granite Belt as having "terroir in spades" and the chapter in this latest work shows his appreciation is undiminished.  He is also clearly a fan of the Strange Bird alternative wine trail, created by Granite Belt winemakers in 2007.

Pruning punishment

Granite Belt vignerons have spared a thought for these poor French vineyard workers.  This photo records the plight of those pruning the vineyards of Eperney in the Champagne region this month. Photo taken by John & Denice Arlidge of Whiskey Gully Wines....from the comfort of their warm touring hire car!  Meanwhile closer to home Granite Belt grapegrowers are hoping for a somewhat dryer end to the growing season here before vintage begins in the Stanthorpe begins - typically in February.

Bush Tucker takes off in Granite Belt

Visit Stanthorpe in January where The Aussie Beef Steakhouse is introducing a special Aussie Taster plate influenced by native bush tucker.   The entree includes :
  • Grilled Crocodile skewers with Desert Lime Chutney
  • Herb crusted seared emu steak with grilled field mushrooms
  • Kangaroo, bush tomato and mountain pepper sausage with tomato relish
  • Braised wild goat and onion pie.
The steakhouse adjoins the High Street Motor Inn, both run by the Cox family. Your hosts will regale you with the story behind Akatjurra, the bush tomato harvested by the Alyawarra Aboriginal tribe and the Mountain Pepper plus all the other bush goodies.  Tucker and its tale for just $16 - this entree portion is perfect for curious tastebuds and patriots when dining on the Granite Belt.  While in the region, pop into Castle Glen and try their bush tucker in a bottle - ask for the wild plum liqueur.

Looking for something a little different this Christmas?  Here are a few home grown ideas from the Queensland wine capital. The bonus is you don't even need to leave home to make your selection from these Granite Belt goodies. Click to view and purchase.

Road Work Ahead

Traveller safety is always important and unseasonally heavy rains mean some disruption to road services will occur at Cunningham's Gap.  Main Roads is working on this section of the highway between Brisbane/Gold Coast to the Granite Belt during December.

To assist our visitors we have updates on www.granitebeltwinecountry.com.au and use the icon (right) to find further information. You'll find there: regular updates, plus an alternative route map and a link to register for free SMS updates from Main Roads on these important works.  Apologies for the inconvenience but do visit us in Stanthorpe soon where the summer fruit is in full season!

Bush tucker turned international liqueur a winner

Food Magazine’s 2010 Food Challenge Awards has awarded Highly Commended to a new product from Castle Glen Australia. The new drink adapts ‘bush tucker’ to an exotic liqueur and earned it a place in the finals for the second successive year in the alcoholic beverages section.

Based just north of Stanthorpe, Castle Glen believes their Ooray Fermented Plum Liqueur is perhaps the first true product to originate from this endangered variety of native plum, ‘Davidsonia Jerseyana’.  This Australian indigenous fruit is sourced only from organic, sustainable growing resources with plantings increasing each year.

The alcoholic beverages section included breweries and large corporate alcohol and beverage companies, so recognition for Castle Glen is a great achievement for the relatively small Granite Belt producer.

Castle Glen sees strong export potential, particularly to Japan, Korea, Taiwan where the plum is much revered for its digestive qualities.

Annual Winestate Wins

The first results of Winestate magazine's annual Best of State wine tastings have just come in. Queensland's best includes Whiskey Gully Wines Black Rod Shiraz 2006. The Stanthorpe winery retails this wine through their cellar door and restaurant for $26/bottle, or via mail order.

Based on previous years results, the four star rated wine is expected to be one of many from the Granite Belt which is well regarded as Queensland's premier wine region. Only a small number of wine producers are awarded a rating during the year, half of all wines submitted do not pass through the judging process and fewer than 20% make the cut in the annual issue. The special Annual edition - on sale in January 2011 - includes a full listing featuring the Best of the Best.

Curry hot spot in Stanthorpe

Bella Rosa's is the newest name in curry cuisine on the Granite Belt, thanks to the arrival of a chef from the sub-continent.

The popular spot just north of Stanthorpe, makes the transition from old fashioned tea shop by day to curry hot spot at night, giving a new meaning to food fusion.  Adding a touch of spice, the team at Bella Rosa's promote it as "Baha Thul-india" because the cafe is sited in the small village of Thulimbah. [Now why didn't I think of that!]

Locals have welcomed the news because until now there has been no Indian restaurant in the Queensland wine capital.  The new menu is crafted by chef Sunni Gill who came to the Granite Belt via 25 years in kitchens in New Zealand and Australia.

Indian fare is available at Bella Rosa's from Thursday to Sunday 4.30pm onwards for dine in or take away or pre-booked groups at other times phone 4685 2367.

Spring has Sprung Primavera style

September is always a busy time in and around Stanthorpe as the vineyards and orchards on the Granite Belt start to come to life after the frosty winter hibernation.

Today – 1st September marks the start of spring – this is the beginning of three months of special events under our Primavera banner.

Dozens of wine and food events during Primavera bring a steady flow of visitors to the region, and this year is no exception. Across the region trees are in blossom and early budburst has begun on grapevines. Excellent winter rains mean that the wild flowers and nature walks with be spectacular this year, which is a treat for bushwalkers and photographers.

Being close to the QLD/NSW border we benefit from an extended school holiday season so 18 September to 10 October will be a busy time in the Stanthorpe Visitor Information Centre as families hit the road.

The name Primavera pays tribute to the many Italians who have settled in Stanthorpe - it's their word for spring.  Come and join the season of wine, food, music and the arts....or just enjoy communing with nature!

Meet the farmer at the Ekka

Monday 9 August was official Granite Belt day on the Taste of Queensland stage at the Brisbane Ekka.

Five sessions showcased Granite Belt wine and food and provided a chance to meet some of the producers and identities from this diverse region.

And it wouldn't be the Ekka if you didn't get to meet a farmer, but the Granite Belt went one better in providing two farmers for the price of one.  David Sutton (left) was a prawn farmer before moving to Stanthorpe to become an apple grower.

While David shared samples of his range of juices and ciders produced under the Suttons label, host Alison Alexander whipped up a quick apple cake.  The day's programme included Vineyard Cafe chef David Black matching his culinary skill with regional produce, winemakers from Ballandean and Golden Grove Estates plus an overview of the spring Primavera events season by Granite Belt Wine & Tourism.

Granite Belt insight into a Dirty Job

In what may be described as a "Bluffers Guide to Archaeology" academics from USQ will be using some simple language to explain what happens when they get down and dirty. It's part of the Inaugural McGregor in the Vines 2010 workshops which are set amongst the vineyards of Queensland's Granite Belt region.

A two-day weekend workshop on 4 and 5 September will begin with a broad overview of archaeological methods and techniques. Day two includes an introduction to practical laboratory analysis where particpants will be actively involved in the prelimary sorting, identification and preliminary analysis of an actual archaeological site. We are assured no previous experience is required.

To learn all about these activities at the Queensland College of Wine Tourism (QCWT) in Stanthorpe email now.

Hungry Diners Win in Kitchen Romance

After a lifetime of feeding hungry friends, family and visitors, Mary Puglisi has finally hung up her apron at Ballandean Estate’s Barrel Room Café.

Ahead of a well-earned rest, Mary has just handed over the wooden spoon to two young chefs with a flair for food and an eye for a new business opportunity.

Prior to relocating to the Granite Belt from Brisbane, Matt and Bobbi Wells quite literally stumbled across the opportunity to lease the well-known café, and grabbed it with both hands. The Puglisi family said the day the married couple walked into their cellar door, proved fortunate for all. Hungry diners in the Granite Belt being the ultimate winners.

Matt and Bobbi both have extensive experience catering for large resorts and conventions as well 5 star a la carte menus. With a changing seasonal menu plus the chance to dine amongst the barrels, it is a wine and food marriage made in heaven. Located just south of Stanthorpe the Barrel Room Cafe is open for lunch daily (except Tuesday) an on Friday and Saturday evenings for dinner.
